Monastery of Agia Marina

The Monastery of Agia Marina in Andros is one of the most important spiritual and religious centres in Greece. It is located in the area of Apoikia, north of Chora of Andros, and is dedicated to the 3rd century A.D. Great Martyr, Agia Marina.

The history of the monastery dates back to 1325 AD, when Saint Marina miraculously appeared to an elderly ascetic in the area of Litres. The foundation of the monastery was achieved with the financial support of Emperor Emmanuel II Komnenos and since then it has been an important religious site.

During the 16th century, the monastery was destroyed three times by pirate raids, thus losing its former glory. However, in 1743, Saint Marina miraculously intervened and brought the monastery back to life, bringing to the monastery Hieromonk Sophronios. Sofronios renovated the monastery and turned it into a nunnery in 1746, attracting many of Andros' noblewomen. In this way, the monastery of Agia Marina regained its glory and became known for its holiness and spiritual value.

In 1883, due to a decree of the Bavarian regents, the monastery was forced to close and was converted into a stable. However, the miraculous icon of Agia Marina was saved by the Empeirikos family and placed in the Holy Church of Panagia in Chora of Andros, offering its presence to the community even after the closure of the monastery.
